Who's The Fox?

Who’s The Fox?

A Sermon By: Pastor Henry T. Anderson

Windsor Avenue Bible Church, Oceanside, NY

Luke 13:31-35

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Intro: Well, Well, Well… Here we have a Quote from Our Lord and Savior, Almighty God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, basically going Negative and Calling a Politician a Negative Name. Jesus called King Herod a Fox…

Now The Bible Mentions Six Herod’s, so let’s run them down!

1. Herod the Great (ruled 37-4 B.C.) He’s the guy in the Christmas story. Super powerful client king answerable to Rome. Tried to trick the wise men. Killed the babies in Bethlehem (not to mention some of his own sons and wives). Not cuddly at all. Actually, you wouldn’t invite any of these Herods to become your “bosom friend,” but especially not “the Great.”

2. Herod Archelaus (ruled 4 B.C.-A.D. 6) He was one of Herod the Great’s three sons mentioned in the Bible. He received one-half of his father’s territory, the area surrounding and near Jerusalem (Judea and Samaria). Joseph was unwilling to move Mary and toddler Jesus to Bethlehem after fleeing to Egypt because Bethlehem was in this Herod’s territory and, like his father “the Great,” Herod Archelaus wasn’t known to be very cuddly either. He got replaced by a Roman procurator less than ten years into his reign; that’s why Pontius Pilate is the man in charge at Jesus’ crucifixion rather than one of the “Herods.”

3. Herod Antipas (ruled 4 B.C.-A.D. 39) Jesus called him “the Fox” (Luke 13:32) Here’s our Guy! He received a quarter of his father’s territory (Galilee and Perea). Divorced his first wife and married Herodias, the wife of his brother (who was yet a different “Herod”). He had killed John the Baptist. Pontius Pilate sent Jesus to see this Herod as part of Jesus’ trial since this Herod was visiting Jerusalem at the time Jesus was sentenced to death. Did you know that Pilate and Herod Antipas became friends that day (Luke 23:12)?

4. Herod Philip the Tetrarch (ruled 4 B.C.-A.D. 34) Got the remaining quarter of his father’s territory (north and east of Galilee—mostly ruled over Syrians and Greeks). Married his niece, Salome, the daughter of Herodias (Herod Antipas’s wife-of-sin).

5. Herod Agrippa I (ruled A.D. 37-44 [41-44 in Judea]) Grandson of Herod the Great and nephew of Herodias, Herod Antipas’s wife. Eventually ended up ruling over even more territory than did his grandfather, Herod the Great. In the book of Acts he is known as the one who put Peter in prison (Acts 12:1-5)…although he couldn’t keep him there (12:6-19)! Also…“He did not give God the glory” when referred to as a god by the people of Tyre and Sidon and was thus struck by an angel and “eaten by worms” (Acts 12:20-23). A sad way to go…

6. Herod Agrippa II (ruled A.D. 50s until long after the end of the Jewish war; died around A.D. 93) Like his father Herod Agrippa I and great-grandfather Herod the Great he ruled over a large territory. He’s the one who interviewed Paul along with the Roman procurator Porcius Festus when Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea (in Palestine) after Paul’s third missionary journey (Acts 25-26). Agrippa exclaimed to Paul (literal translation): “In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian” (Acts 26:28). Or was his statement ironic? Either way, Paul ended up appealing directly to Caesar and so had no more contact after this with the final powerful “Herod.”

So what have we learned? Don’t name Your Son Herod!

Again, here we have a Quote from Our Lord and Savior, Almighty God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, basically going Negative and Calling a Politician a Negative Name. Jesus called King Herod a Fox…

Let’s turn to The Gospel of John Chapter 18:

John 18:33-38

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

Pontius Pilate was the…. say it… The Governor of Israel…

And Oh boy, haven’t The Governors been in the News the last three months…

Notice, that it’s The Governor’s and not The King/President that’s been making all the rules…

It's the Governors that usually don’t like The Police, are now using The Police to Arrest, Summons and Harass its Citizens.

It's the Governors that Arrests it Citizens for Violating Social Distance, but releases Criminals from their Jails.

It's the Governors that keep the Baby Killing Offices open, keep the Liquor and Marijuana Stores open, but closed Churches...

It’s The Governors that usually don’t like The Police, but are using The Police to Summonses or Arrest Pastors that have Church Services…

In New York, they expect You to Pay Your County and School Taxes even though they Closed Your Business and Closed The Schools...

It’s The Governors that encouraging its Citizens to Tattletale or Snitch on each other if they see someone Violating The Governors “Executive Order”…

Did You know that God is against Tattletaling?

Lev 19:16

Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

Pro 11:13

A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

Pro 18:8

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

Pro 20:19

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Pro 26:20

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Pro 26:22

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

This is not The Christian America I know…

According to NYC Newspapers, Recently NYC Mayor Warren Wilhelm de Blasio Jr called for New Yorkers to report alleged lockdown violations. Rather than inspiring people to come together against a common foe, Hizzoner’s approach and tone turned NYC Residents into grade-school tattletales, bringing out the worst, rather than the best, in us. It’s also likely to do more to undermine support for social-distancing measures than to bolster it.

The mayor says that mobilizing the citizenry to call in possible rules violations is no different than encouraging people to report suspicious activity related to terrorism.

So, a Muslim Terrorist with a Suitcase Bomb is no different than a Family having a few friends over for a BBQ or Meetinag at a Church… Continuing…

It’s The Governor’s that will arrest You and Me for having a Church Service or will arrest You and Me for violating a six foot Social Distancing “Executive Order”…

And it’s The Governors that tell Us to Stay Home, Don’t go to Work…

Here in New York and other Lockdown States we’re like the only People in the World Protesting that we want to go to work!

Now in all seriousness…

And I actually get what the Governors are doing. I understand that The Virus is real, we have to be careful, there’s a real risk, all of us know either someone that had the Virus or sadly died from the Virus…

I am here not to diminish or Poo-Poo what has happened…

I’m not here to have a Political Debate on what’s going on…

Although, I believe that many of them have politicalized this Pandemic.

It’s simple, Red States are open, Blue States are on Lockdown…

I respect those that have caution and want to stay home…

And that’s sort of the debate here…

If You have a right to choose to Kill a Baby,

Than You should have a right to go to Church, Ding, Ding, Ding!

But, We do have a Right to go to Church according to The United States Constitution! The first 10 Amendments to the Constitution make up the Bill of Rights. James Madison wrote the amendments, which list specific prohibitions on governmental power, in response to calls from several states for greater constitutional protection for individual liberties.

The First Amendment of The United States Constitution Says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

And Let’s Break The First Amendment it down:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…

The Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment gives you the right to worship or not as you choose. The government can't penalize you because of your religious beliefs.

The Free Exercise Clause gives all Americans the right to practice their religion freely, without interference or persecution by the government.

or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…

In a free press, those who own the press or the media have the right to print or say what they want, without persecution or any interference from the government.

We got all sorts of Opinioned Press, and that’s good!

This clause is generally understood to prohibit the government from interfering with the printing and distribution of information or opinions.

or the right of the people peaceably to assemble…

The right to assembly guarantees that Americans have the right to peaceably come together to protest, and also have the right to come together to express and pursue collective interests.

Freedom of Assembly, sometimes used interchangeably with the freedom of association, is the individual right to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend common interests. The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human and political right, and a civil liberty.

and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances…

The right to petition gives citizens the right to appeal to the government to change its policies. It gives citizens the right to stand up for something they think is wrong, or support certain legislation, etc. that can help right those wrongs.

‘Putting people at risk:’ NYC Mayor, Police Commissioner Ban protests during Pandemic…

Did You know that New York has a State Constitution?

In fact, all 50 States have their own State Constitution!

The New York State Constitution Reads:

Bill Of Rights

Section 3:

§3. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed in this state to all humankind; and no person shall be rendered incompetent to be a witness on account of his or her opinions on matters of religious belief; but the liberty of conscience hereby secured shall not be so construed as to excuse acts of licentiousness, or justify practices inconsistent with the peace or safety of this state.

There’s Your History Lesson. Its The Government’s own words and actions. I just read it and reported it to You. I didn’t edit or slice and dice anything here. As SGT Friday would say: “It’s just the facts!”

That was a Big Introduction and a a bulk of the Message, Let’s return to Luke Chapter 13 here. Verse 31:

Luke 13:31-35

31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.

Notice a few things…

It was The Religious Leaders that told Jesus to leave…

Isn’t that sad. Instead of Defending the Faith, it was cut and run…

And then remember in John 18 it was The Chief Priests that turned Jesus into Pilate…

I’m actually disappointed in The Religious Leaders in New York…

Where is their Voice? Where is the Unity?

I’ve called Pastors, Christian Lawyers, Christian Organizations and all I’m getting is:

“We don’t want to be see seen as the bad guys in New York”

“You can’t challenge a Governor Cuomo appointed Judge, You’ll lose.”

“Just ride it out, enjoy the time of rest and relaxation…” Then I tell them that I own My Own Essential Business and I work six days a week, and I hear, You’re really out there Pastor?” Ah, duh Yeah, I haven’t skipped a beat or missed a day of work.

I’m not bragging, but, I have people depending on Me. I’ve got a Wife, I got two kids, I got a Granddaughter, I got Business Clients, I got workers and their Families. We all got to eat, we all got to pay Bills, we gotta live.

I’m not living a life of doom and gloom, I’m not gonna be Locked Down.

Jesus said in John 10:10

10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John speaking of Jesus in John 1:4-5 said:

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Paul said in Philippians 4:13

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

And The Church needs to Step up here in in New York!

Verse 32. Jesus speaking to The Religious Leaders says:
